crossover trial crossover trial

CDISC

A type of study where each participant receives all the study treatments but in a randomly assigned order.

Example of crossover trial in a sentence

In crossover trials, all participants receive the same interventions but the order that they are given is randomly assigned.

More Info

In a crossover trial, one group of participants receives study treatment A first followed by study treatment B, while the other group of participants receives study treatment B followed by study treatment A. There is sometimes a wash-out period in between.

The order in which the study treatments are given is randomized.

A benefit of this is that confounding may be reduced as each participant serves as their own “control.”

Other info to think about when joining a study

The type of research study is often described in the consent form. If you are considering joining a crossover trial, there should be information about what this is and what the study treatments are.

If you are deciding whether to join a crossover trial, you may want to ask the research team more about how long the study will take and if there is a washout period between taking each study treatment.

Before joining the study, you could also ask the study team what the process might be if you think one study treatment is working better for you than another.
