More Info

A vaccine can be given through a needle, or as a liquid, pill, or nasal spray. A vaccine teaches the body’s immune system to protect itself from harmful germs. It can help stop a person from getting sick, or from getting as sick as they might have without the vaccine.

A vaccine is usually made from weak or killed forms of a virus or bacterium, its toxins, or surface proteins.

All vaccines involve adding a small piece of a bacterium or virus into a person’s body, to help the immune system get stronger by causing an immune response. A vaccine boosts the body’s immune system so when it sees the vaccine agent, it destroys it and remembers the agent in case of future exposure.
