CDISC

Example of study identifier in a sentence

Every research study has a study identifier that can be used instead of the study title when looking it up or talking about it.

More Info

There are many different types of study identifiers. A single study could have multiple different unique study identifiers.

For example, a study identifier can be created:
1. by the study sponsor to refer to the study at their company
2. by the research team or study site
3. by the ethics committee or other oversight group for the review process
4. when a study is registered in a clinical trial registry.

Other info to think about when joining a study

If you are thinking about joining a study, you may not hear about the “study identifier” but you will likely see different study numbers or codes, like a protocol number or a registration number. For example, on www.clinicaltrials.gov you would see the a study identifier called the NCT number.

These study identifiers can be helpful as a quick way to refer to a study and make it easier to find in different databases.

Often the research team will just refer to the study by its name, but you can ask the study team if there are other numbers or codes that would be helpful for you to know.
