In clinical research, data can be shared to do more research. Data sharing reduces the number of new participants that are needed since data are already available.
In addition to new research, data sharing improves transparency because the published data can be reviewed and even reanalyzed.
Data sharing at the end of a study is done in ways that protect participant privacy. For example, the data do not include direct identifiers, such as your name and address.
When data are shared amongst the different sites of the same research study, that is typically not considered “data sharing (research)” in this context. That is considered normal activities needed to conduct research.
