Checklists are important to ensure tests are run consistently across participants.\u00a0 Krug (2010) provides useful checklists <a href=\"https:\/\/mrctcenter.org\/health-literacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/usability-testing-krug-checklists-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. A usability test plan includes the following:[\/vc_column_text][vc_tta_accordion style=&#8221;flat&#8221; shape=&#8221;square&#8221; c_icon=&#8221;chevron&#8221; active_section=&#8221;0&#8243; no_fill=&#8221;true&#8221; collapsible_all=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Decide on testing type(s)&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1571582376303-277dd80a-0c1a&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are a variety of testing types.\u00a0 For example, a performance test would determine whether the user can complete a specific task.\u00a0 Is the user able to follow-through on the study visit schedule or complete any applicable self-reported study assessments?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Develop scenarios&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1571582376389-58aeefbc-ec3b&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operationalize the chosen test types by creating scenarios. A scenario is a story that sets the context for the tasks you want the users to accomplish. The tasks will be those items that are the most important things a user needs to do or know.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Example scenario<\/strong> for testing a consent form for understanding of the study visit schedule and procedures:<br \/>\n<em>You have been invited to join a research study called ABC. You are invited because you have Type 2 diabetes.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Task: Indicate the section of the document that discusses periodic clinic visits and list what procedures will take place at each visit.\u00a0 How many visits will there be?\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Example scenario<\/strong> for testing a consent form for understanding of specific concepts like study medication and randomization:<br \/>\n<em>You are considering joining a research study called XYZ.\u00a0 You are invited because you have high blood pressure.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Task: Describe which treatment you will get if you join the study.\u00a0 Who decides? <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Example scenario<\/strong> for testing a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicalcenter.nih.gov\/ocmr\/pdf\/hiv_flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trial recruitment flyer<\/a>:<br \/>\n<em>You have an appointment with your physician. As you take the elevator to the physician\u2019s office you notice a flyer in the elevator.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Task: Who is eligible to participate in this trial?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">You can find advice on writing scenarios at these two sites: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usability.gov\/how-to-and-tools\/methods\/scenarios.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">usability.gov<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/task-scenarios-usability-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nielsen Norman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Create questionnaires&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1571582376482-2b5ae83f-0b6d&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Questionnaires are another tool to gather usability data. Barnum (2011) lists three questionnaire types:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>pre-test &#8211; <\/strong>to obtain additional information about the user.<\/li>\n<li><strong>post-task &#8211; <\/strong>to get feedback right after a user completes a scenario.<\/li>\n<li><strong>post-test &#8211; <\/strong>to rate the user\u2019s overall experience, often using Likert scales.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Prepare an end-of-session interview&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1571582376574-50ba370e-6663&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>End-of-sessions interviews are another way to gather data. These are often structured in the form of open-ended questions.<\/li>\n<li>The end-of-session interview is a place to explore how a participant might carry out procedures required by the trial that are done outside the research setting, for example filling out a study diary or taking a study medication at home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Write a script&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1571582376668-e3419c10-8d83&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A script ensures the usability test is the same for each user. This script includes welcoming the user, handling any necessary forms, gathering demographic data, facilitating the scenarios, and thanking the users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][\/vc_tta_accordion][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]<strong>3.\u00a0 Recruit Users<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recruiting users can be time consuming:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>decide on a user profile in order to identify representative users.<\/li>\n<li>offer a small incentive to thank users for their time and opinions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usability.gov\/how-to-and-tools\/methods\/recruiting-usability-test-participants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this link<\/a> for additional advice:[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Usability is one of the tools available to researchers to ensure efficacy and understanding of clinical trial life cycle materials Usability testing provides a way to test clinical trial materials with people who are like the study population to ensure the content and delivery method will best meet the needs of potential and enrolled participants of a research study.\u00a0\u00a0 We will refer to people recruited for usability testing as <em>users<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Usability results have the potential to make a communication more effective, thereby increasing comprehension. By learning why and when users are confused or lose interest, a better user experience can be provided, and the accuracy of the information transfer can be improved.<\/p>\n<p>While it is essential for the artifacts to be effective, usability also looks at the user\u2019s <strong>satisfaction<\/strong> with the interaction. In clinical research, greater satisfaction with something like the way information is presented in a consent form, can impact participation in a trial, as well as perceptions of clinical trials more generally.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1571582495076{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-right: 5px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;padding-left: 5px !important;background-color: #efefef !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Conducting a usability test<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>What Happens during a Usability Test Session?<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The facilitator welcomes the user, explains the test session, asks the user to sign the release form, and asks any pre-test or demographic questions. (Release forms and other applicable forms can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usability.gov\/how-to-and-tools\/resources\/templates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gov forms<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/sensible.com\/downloads-rsme.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Krug forms<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>The facilitator gives more details about the process and asks if the user has any additional questions. The facilitator then explains where to start.<\/li>\n<li>The user reads the task scenario aloud and begins working on the scenario while they think aloud.<\/li>\n<li>One to three observers take notes of the user\u2019s behaviors, comments, errors and completion (success or failure) on each task.<\/li>\n<li>The session continues until all task scenarios are completed or time allotted has elapsed.<\/li>\n<li>The facilitator either asks the end-of-session interview questions or gives the user a questionnaire to complete, thanks them, provides the incentive (if applicable), and escorts the user from the testing environment.<\/li>\n<li>The facilitator then resets the materials, checks in with the observers and waits for the next user to
