Discovery<\/h1>\n<h3>Public awareness of, education about, and access to clinical research<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]&#8221;Discovery&#8221; is the time when members of the intended audience\u00a0learn\u00a0about research for the first time.\u00a0 Here is an opportunity to build trust in the research establishment and demonstrate transparency in research.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the \u201cDiscovery<em>\u201d<\/em> stage of the clinical trial life cycle, general information about clinical trials or a larger research program may be shared for informational purposes and\/or to lay a foundation for future study-specific recruitment.<\/li>\n<li>The focus at this point is on general education and on developing relationships that lay the foundation for a person\u2019s future research interest and study participation.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, \u201cDiscovery\u201d can be two-sided: this is an ideal time for research stakeholders to gather information from the potential study population to better support a research idea, define research outcomes that potential participants agree are important, and gauge interest in the research study.\n<ul>\n<li>Ideally, many of these activities would\u00a0occur <u>prior<\/u> to\u00a0finalizing a study protocol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Any materials and scripts used to introduce research concepts should ideally be subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/mrctcenter.org\/health-literacy\/tools\/overview\/usability-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">usability testing<\/a> with the population of interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1570380425346{background-color: #99ccff !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1570801594104{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;}&#8221;]<strong>Click through the individual tabs below to learn more about how your &#8220;Discovery&#8221; openness to joining a study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teams drafting research information should include input from people who are\u00a0similar to the study population and share their characteristics.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These individuals can help create effective communications and may help support interactions if necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a research study is developed, input from the community of interest on study design, study logistics, and study outcomes helps researchers offer research participation opportunities that are relevant and important to the study population of interest through a process of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Getting to know the needs of the population,<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring the study is relevant to that population,<\/li>\n<li>Developing a protocol with procedures that are more likely to be adhered to.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying what information the population wants after the study is over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider\u00a0including patient navigators and <a href=\"https:\/\/nccc.georgetown.edu\/culturalbroker\/2_role\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cultural brokers<\/a> to help promote trust in research in the local community[\/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=&#8221;FIND OUT MORE ABOUT CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS&#8221;
